The United Kingdom has warned its citizens of a possible outbreak of violence in Nigeria as the country celebrates its Democracy Day on Saturday.

It gave the warning in its latest travel advisory published on its website on Friday.

The advisory read, “On 12 June, protests over insecurity are planned in multiple locations, including large cities.

“You should remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations, protests or large gatherings and pay attention to local media and social media reports on protest locations.”

It noted that the Nigeria Police Force launched ‘Operation Restore Peace’ on May 19 to deal with the recent increase in insecurity in South-South and South-Eastern states.

“This may lead to an enhanced security presence on the ground. There is no indication as to how long this operation will last.

“You should exercise caution whilst travelling in the region,” it added.

The travel advisory further explained that in Southern Nigeria, curfews were imposed in response to reports of attacks on security personnel, police stations, and checkpoints.

In Anambra, it stated, curfew was in place in six communities from 7pm to 6am. daily, adding that Ebonyi has curfew covering all entry and exit points from 8pm to 6am.

“In Rivers, the state-wide curfew was extended from May 11 and is now in place from 7pm to 6am. Other curfews may be announced at short notice.

Jade Osiberu’s Next Film “Gangs Of Lagos” stars Adesua Etomi, Tobi Bakre & Chiké as Best Friends

Published

on

Filmmaker Jadesola Osiberu has a new feature film in the works and this one stars Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Tobi Bakre and Chiké.

Jade produced the recently released cinema hit “Áyìnlá” and the highly acclaimed blockbuster “Sugar Rush“, which also featured Adesua Etomi alongside Bisola Aiyeola and Bimbo Ademoye.

This new movie “Gangs of Lagos” is about a group of friends —Obalola, Gift and Panama — who grow up on the streets of Isale Eko. The movie is inspired by real-life characters. It’s “a story that will move you,” Chiké says.

Without revealing much, Jade gave us a look at one of the film’s locations, a rooftop in Isale Eko, where she was inspired to write the story five years ago.

2016 I shot a scene from Gidi Up season 3 on a rooftop in Isale Eko and I was inspired to write a film about a group of friends who grow up on the streets of Isale Eko.

Fast forward 5 years and we’re standing on that very same rooftop, shooting a scene with best friends Obalola (@tobibakre ), Gift (@adesuaetomi ) & Panama (@officialchike ) in Gangs of Lagos.

Really grateful that I get to continue my on-screen love affair with Lagos, the city we all share a love/hate relationship with but we all acknowledge, there’s nowhere in the world quite like Lagos!

The lead actors also shared photos from the same scene on Instagram. “Meet best friends Obalola (@tobibakre), Gift (myself) and Panama (@officialchike). ‘Gangs Of Lagos’ is gonna blow you away. I promise you,” Adesua wrote in her caption.

On-set production for the movie kicked off on the 18th of June, the same day “Áyìnlá” was released in the cinema and Jade celebrated with a photo of the first slate which confirmed her as the film’s director.

“It’s a double celebration day! 💃🏾💃🏾Today, as the first film in our slate #AyinlatheMovie releases in cinemas, we roll our first scenes on my next feature film, Gangs of Lagos,” Jade wrote.

She later shared another photo that revealed “Gangs Of Lagos” also features Ikorodu Bois.

We can’t wait to see the magic Jade creates as she brings this story to life.

Court orders release of detained OPC members after three months

Published

on

The Chief Magistrate Court 2, Iyaganku, Ibadan, in the Oyo State capital, has ordered the release of three members of the Oodua Peoples Congress, three months after their detention by the Oyo State Police Command.

The OPC members – Awodele Adedigba, Dauda Kazeem and Hassan Ramon – had been detained mid-March 2021 after they arrested a suspected criminal reportedly from the Fulani ethnic stock, Iskilu Wakili.

Wakili had been accused of terrorising Igangan and other villages in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

The OPC had handed over Wakili to the Oyo State Police Command but the police subsequently detained three OPC members for allegedly burning down Wakili’s house and killing an unknown woman in the process.

However, the OPC and one of its leaders, Gani Adams, had said the murder and arson allegations were false, adding that it immediately handed over Wakili and three of his accomplices to the police in Igboora after their arrest.

The three detainees on Tuesday appeared before the magistrates’ court, presided over by A.O. Amzat, and were discharged and acquitted after the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions failed to prove to the court that the OPC men were guilty as charged.

Counsel for the defendants, Akwarandu Adetoun, told The PUNCH that the magistrate struck out the case and ordered the release of the detainees.

The OPC Coordinator in Oyo State, Rotimi Olumo, also confirmed the release of his men in a chat with The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Before Wakili’s arrest, farmers and residents of Igangan, Ayete, Kajola and neighbouring villages in Ibarapaland lived in perpetual fear of Wakili who was accused of displacing them from their farms, kidnapping their rich men and raping their women.

Igangan has been in the eye of the storm of late as marauding hoodlums carry out successive attacks on the rustic agrarian village, creating palpable panic and tension in residents of the area.

Earlier in June, no fewer than 17 persons were reportedly shot dead when hoodlums invaded the town on motorcycles around 11pm and started killing and destroying property, which continued until around 3am the next day.

Osinbajo spoke at the maiden edition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Progressives Youth Conference in Abuja.

He said: “In the area of disruption and disruptive innovation, the principle that we are stronger together than in little part is a sound principle and it’s my respectful view that those who advocate the breaking up of the country are terribly wrong,” Osinbajo told a crowd of youths and party chieftains at the International Conference Centre, Abuja,”

“Our size is crucial for geopolitical and economic relevance. Our people will be better served by a large populous and diverse country.

“As with all big and diverse countries, our business is to make this union work; it’s to give everybody a sense of belonging.

“All of those waiting on the sidelines, hoping that this big country called Nigeria will break up into bits so that they can pick up the pieces, will be very sorely disappointed and I’m very sure that those of you who are seated here today will prevent that from happening.”
