Edo in Diaspora wants Benin Monarch’s support for specialised market

Published

By Ozioruva Aliu

BENIN CITY – A United Kingdom (UK) based Businessman from Edo state, Mr. Monday Ohuimuwen has called for support from the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II to set up a specialised market in Benin for machineries and domestic appliances.

Ohuimuwen said the initiative has the support of Edo people in Diaspora comprising Benin, Esan and Afemai and that the palace has been contacted to inform it that such a project will soon take off in Benin City.

According to the International businessman, “we want the palace to help us with a land and we are suing for the Omo N’Oba’s support which will do a lot in the area of Public Relations and advertisement.”

He further explained that the way the Group intends to work is to get Edo people  abroad to gather their resources and form a cooperative and the money so gathered would be invested in the business .

According to him: “We will have a specialised market, where a lot of people in Europe will pull resources together. That money will be used to send the goods to Nigeria. The good thing about it is that before the present Oba of Benin came to the throne, in one of his interviews, he stated that he likes to have something like a market for the Diaspora where they will sell imported machineries like I have mentioned. The Oba knows what we are saying.”

On the modalities for selling the goods, Ohuimuwen said: “These goods will be sent to different local governments markets where our brothers and sisters from the various villages will come and buy. Some of these local government areas have boundaries with other states, such as Delta, Kogi and Ondo, which will further buy from us and it will spread. These border states do not have as many people in Diaspora as we are.”

He pleaded with the palace of the Oba of Benin to facilitate the take-off in terms of logistics support and provision of the site to be used for the Diaspora market.

Lewandowski equals Bundesliga record with 40th goal

Published

on

Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old scoring record as the Bayern Munich striker netted his 40th Bundesliga goal of the season in a 2-2 draw at Freiburg on Saturday.

Lewandowski, FIFA’s best male player of 2020, has equalled Mueller’s tally, scored over 34 games in 1971/72, in just 28 league fixtures this term.

Lewandowski converted a penalty for the champions after 26 minutes to equal the league’s record.

As part of his penalty celebrations, the Poland striker lifted his match shirt to reveal a picture of Gerd Mueller over the text “4ever Gerd”.

The fixture was briefly halted after Lewandowski equalled Mueller’s milestone as his Bayern team-mates made a guard-of-honour on the side of the pitch which the smiling 32-year-old ran through.

Freiburg drew level almost immediately when Manuel Gulde headed in at the near post from a corner on 29 minutes after slipping his marker.

Bayern, who were crowned German champions last weekend for the ninth season in a row, upped the tempo after the break.

Serge Gnabry had a goal disallowed six minutes into the second-half after the VAR spotted he was offside in tapping home a Leroy Sane cross.

However, the Bavarians kept up the pressure and when David Alaba’s long-range pass found Thomas Mueller in the area just moments later, he squared for Sane who hit home on 53 minutes.

Freiburg had their chances to equalise as second-half replacements Lucas Hoeler and Janik Haberer both went close before Christian Guenter brought the sides level nine minutes from time.

Lewandowski can still break Mueller’s record as Bayern have one match left of the campaign at home to Augsburg next Saturday.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward, who has scored 47 goals in 39 games in all competitions this season, is set to be crowned the Bundesliga’s top-scorer for the sixth time in eight years.

His tally of 40 league goals this season includes four hat-tricks as well as a four-goal haul in Bayern’s nervy 4-3 home win against Hertha Berlin last October.

Published

By Festus Ahon, ASABA

MINORITY Leader of the Federal House of Representatives and member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, Saturday flagged off empowerment programme with 350 beneficiaries drawn from the Constituency.

Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa flagged off the distribution and presentation of the empowerment items, commended Mr Ndudi Elumelu for the gesture, adding that it would help lift the people out of the poverty level.

While encouraging other representatives and well-meaning Deltans to emulate Mr Ndudi Elumelu, Okowa said the gesture was in the right direction and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, said the 350 beneficiaries were drawn from various wards across the four local government areas in the Federal constituency that he represents at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly.

While listing the empowerment items to include; 111 electricity generating sets, 90 deep freezers, 148 motorcycles and 107 tricycles, he said the items would assist the beneficiaries to engage in some form of independent, lucrative enterprise.

The Federal Lawmaker explained that the whole idea was to make the beneficiaries small business owners who would eventually help in creating jobs and reducing poverty in their immediate communities.

Elumelu said: “I urge the beneficiaries to be passionate in putting these items into proper use and to see this as an opportunity to climb to an enviable level of prosperity which is before you today.

“Though it appears insignificant, it is my expectation that from this small beginning, with determination, focus and fear of God, you will be able to record amazing testimonies, not only as employers of labour in our communities but also providers of essential social services to meet some of the essential needs of our people”.

While commending Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his administration’s sustained efforts in reducing poverty through various empowerment programmes, he said; “your passionate effort has brought, in no small measure, prosperity to a very good number of our youths and people in Delta State.

“We will continue to join and support you (Governor Ifeanyi Okowa), in bringing joy, peace and progress to our people, even as I restate my resolve, never to allow what is due our people elude them so long as I remain their representative in the House of Representatives.”

Elumelu who spoke further said he has attracted some developmental projects to the area, sponsored and moved motions on the floor of the House to the benefits of his constituents and also done a lot of empowerment in the last two years as representative of the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency.

FA Cup final: Iheanacho, Ndidi, Kante start as Leicester, Chelsea clash

Published

on

As Chelsea slug it out with Leicester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, Thomas Tuchel’s side will be hoping to pass the first test in their domestic-European club pursuit this season, with their Champions League final against Manchester City to follow.

Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho are handed starting roles in the match.

Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester currently rank ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League table and the club are aiming to lift the Cup for the first time in their history.

The FA Cup final will be decided with 30 minutes of extra time and penalties if required.

This season’s final is taking place before the end of the Premier League season, and the last time this happened was in 2012/13, when Wigan Athletic beat Manchester City 1-0.

For today’s final, over 20,000 people have trooped to Wembley Stadium.

Before kickoff at 17:15 BST, the Duke of Cambridge will be presented to both teams.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Saturday, Nigerian football writer, Clinton McDubus, believes that Chelsea will turn up victorious by a narrow margin.

“I think it will be a draw at full time and go into extra time. 1-0 win for Chelsea most likely,” said McDubus.

“I think finals like this largely depend on experience. Chelsea have players who have dealt with this kind of pressure consistently compared to Leicester. Also, Leicester look heavily reliant on Kelechi these days. If he’s shut down, they are unlikely to do anything significant, as Vardy is in dire form and Barnes is still out.

“History also plays a part. Leicester have lost all the FA Cup finals they’ve ever played, the last being in 1969. They’ve had better luck in the league cup but they’ve not won that since 2000. They have a lot to overcome.

“Chelsea are the 3rd most successful club in the FA Cup. Since 94, they’ve gotten to 10 FA Cup finals. They’ve beaten every team they’ve faced in those 10 finals except Arsenal (whom they’ve lost to in 3 different finals).

“So, history favours Chelsea. Momentum favours Chelsea. Quality favours Chelsea. Experience favours Chelsea.

“We might certainly see an upset but it looks exactly like the kind of final Chelsea always win. Their last 6 FA Cup final wins were by 1 goal. 5 of them ended 1-0.”

Since the turn of the century, Chelsea have reached the FA Cup final on ten occasions and have lifted the trophy six times.

Leicester, on the other hand, have never won the title, with their last final appearance in 1969.

Chelsea line-up: Kepa, Azpilicueta (C), Thiago Silva, Rüdiger, James, Kante, Jorginho, Alonso, Ziyech, Werner, Mount.

Substitutes: Mendy, Chilwell, Emerson, Zouma, Gilmour, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Giroud

Leicester City line-up: Schmeichel (C) Castagne, Fofana, Evans, Soyuncu, Thomas, Ndidi, Tielemans, Perez, Iheanacho, Vardy.

Substitutes: Ward, Morgan, Amartey, Ricardo, Choudhury, Mendy, Praet, Maddison, Albrighton
